Operation Tam, set up to investigate the New Years Day 1998 disappearance of friends Olivia Hope (17) and Ben Smart (21) is a mystery every New Zealander, except perhaps whoever was responsible, wants solved. Olivia and Ben were last seen between 4am and 5am, along with a mystery man as they boarded a yacht moored in Endeavour Inlet off Furneaux Lodge.
This has been one of New Zealand’s highest profile investigations and as early as February 1998, it had cost in excess of a million dollars. It has continued with no signs of bodies or any publicly disclosed evidence that might suggest some other scenario.
Often, the longer an inquiry continues the less likelihood there is of a satisfactory outcome, although there have been many notable exceptions. By 17 March, police estimated they had identified 1600 people who were at Furneaux Lodge and environs on New Years Eve and day and there were then about 300 more to see.

ive Inspector Rob Pope’s has said he is optimistic of an outcome. However, as recently as 22 March he said there were no firm suspects and he was not close to making an arrest. Nevertheless, his doggedness and guarded approach does inspire a quiet confidence among observers, that he knows a lot more than he is letting on and that one day an arrest will be announced.
