Charter boat owner hears “very loud yell”.
Hamish Young, a Blenheim charter boat owner heard a very loud yell on the morning of January 1, 1998.
He had woken about 5:15am and gone up on deck where around 5:30am he heard the yell. He stated the yell was very short and cut off and came from the direction of Furneaux Lodge. Noises tended to echo in the enclosed valley, Young said. There was no other noise at the time and the yell seemed totally isolated.

This testimony follows on the heels of testimony given the day before, regarding loud noises like screaming being heard by three boaties. One witness, Mr Clark from Christchurch, said he awoke around 4:30am and heard screams and yahoos, which he believed, were coming from Furneaux Lodge. Another witness, Mr Broadway, said he awoke around 4am and heard what he thought was a fight. This was in line with testimony given earlier by Mr Christopher Wilson saying he had heard a screaming noise or fight around 4am on that same morning.
