Scott Watson To Stand Trial
Judge Peter McAloon ruled on Tuesday, December 15, 1998, that Scott Watson will be committed for trial on charges of murdering Olivia Hope and Ben Smart.
He said in his ruling that there was enough evidence at the deposition hearing to satisfy him that a trial should proceed. On addressing Watson over his decision he stated “ Taking all of these matters into account I am of the view that the Crown has established a prima facie case against you on the two charges of murder”.
Watson has been remanded in custody and will appear in the Blenheim High Court on February 8, 1999.
Suppression orders on some of the evidence will remain in place. This decision comes after the two week hearing where more than 20 witnesses gave testimony and 415 depositions were taken.
