Marie Jamieson
The body of Marie Jamieson was discovered on Monday, February 19, 2001. It was found behind an engineering factory in Mihini Road, Ranui, West Auckland.
Detective Senior Sergeant Mark Franklin, said forensic evidence pointed to Ms Jamieson's body being dumped where it was found rather than her being murdered there. The police have been conducting tests to see whether she was sexually assaulted.
On February 10, 2001, Ms Jamieson, 23, had been with friends socialising at the Tonic Bar on the corner of Symonds Street and Newton Road in central Auckland. She left to take the bus home and the last confirmed sighting of her was at a liquor store, “Henty Wines and Spirits” in New North Road, Eden Terrace. She purchased a bottle of vodka and was then going to catch a bus to her Methuen Road, Avondale residence.
The bus Marie intended to take would have dropped her off at the bus stop opposite Pak ‘n Save Mt Albert on New North Road. She would have had to walk along Bollard Ave to Methuen Rd, or go through Allan Wood Park to get home.
A bus driver came forward and said that a woman matching Marie’s description had waved her down at a bus stop near Henty’s liquor store on the night of the disappearance. The driver told the woman that she was not going to her destination. Another sighting had Ms Jamieson getting on a bus and going to the Pak 'N Save stop.
At the time of her disappearance, Marie was wearing a red T-shirt with black trim, a straight skirt and sandals and was carrying a Hullo Kitty baby blue shoulder bag. This shoulder bag has not been found but all other pieces of clothing were found next to her body.
Friends and family describe Marie as a bright and vibrant young woman who, like so many finding their way in life, had had a problem with alcohol but had got herself into a alcohol and drug recovery support unit and was doing well.
Police believe that Marie was either abducted by person/s she did not know or knew her murderer/s and did not realise the danger she was in. They have set up a taskforce and continue to canvas the areas around Great North Road and Ranui where the body was found.
They are also attempting to reconstruct Marie’s final hours in the hopes that it may jog the memories of anyone that may have seen her on the night she disappeared.
